Introduction
The
Switch into English Tests
are a comprehensive and complete set of photocopiable testing material.
They have been written to provide teachers with a useful and effective tool to asses the language
progress of their students.
Aims and structure
Each test is constructed to evaluate students’ progress in listening, reading and writing skills as well
as their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.
Listening
part consists mainly of short and long conversations and the task is aimed at measuring
students' ability to understand simple information about familiar topics as well as the speakers’ attitude
or meaning. The recordings to all tests are placed on the
Audio CD 2
.
Vocabulary and grammar
sections comprise types of tasks students’ were acquainted with when
using the
Student’s Book
and
Workbook
(eg filling the gaps, completing sentences, writing affirmative
and negative sentences) and focus on the target lexis and grammar structures presented in the
particular units.
Reading
tasks check students’ ability to read and understand general meaning and specific information
in short texts, based on familiar topics and vocabulary (personal letters, short factual texts,
descriptions).
Writing
part measures students’ ability to write short texts relating to basic aspects of everyday life
(description, personal letters, invitation) according to the given model or guidelines.
Types of tests
All tests are written in
A and B versions
and have been divided into the following categories:
Progress Tests
after each unit
Progress Tests
after every three units (1-3, 4-6, 7-9)
End of First Term Test
after five units (1-5)
End of Year Test
after all units (1-9)
The two-page
Progress Tests
after each unit have been designed to check students lexical and grammar
knowledge as well as listening and reading comprehension and writing skills introduced and practised
in the unit. The expected time for students to complete the test is 30-45 minutes, depending on the
level and abilities of the learners. The four-page
Progress Tests
covering the material from Units: 1-3,
4-6, 7-9 are review tests, aimed at assessing the most important issues of every three-unit set. Students
should be given at least 45 minutes to complete the review test. If needed, the teacher may decide
to devote two lessons to carry it out. The same rule applies both to the
End of First Term Test
and the
End of Year Test
, which are to examine the broad scope of students’ knowledge.
Scoring
Particular sections of the
Progress Tests
after a single unit have got the same number of points to score:
listening – 20, vocabulary – 10, grammar – 30, reading – 20 writing – 20, which makes the total score
of 100 points. The recommended conversion key for the points scored and the grade to be given
is presented below; though it is the teacher who decides if this reflects the level and abilities of his/her
class.
Points scored Grade
100 - 91
5
90 - 75
4
74 - 60
3
59 - 45
2
As a result of a greater number of tasks in the other types of tests, the number of points to score
also rises accordingly, and it comes as following: listening – 40, vocabulary – 20, grammar – 60,
reading – 40 writing – 40 and the total score is 200. However, to have only one conversion key,
and not to introduce another, it is enough to divide points scored and the total by 2.
There is no additional task for students who would like to receive grade 6. It can be obtained, for
example, by completing the test fully correctly (100 points) or by scoring nearly the total (98 - 99 points).
